Topics for Week 2 (2nd Grade) Summer Academics Gold

Each week has separate learning topics for math and English and these topics close each Friday and new topics begin on Monday. Of course, learning often depends on prior knowledge so the topics have some overlap. This is like group tutoring for success.

July 9 is the first day of Week 2 – Grade 2 – Subtraction and Evidence Based Opinions

 

GRADE TWO 

 

   Week    Math     Language & Literacy
Week 1    Focus on Addition:

-able to fluently add/subtract within 20 using mental strategies

-able to solve one and two step word problems involving taking off, putting together, taking apart, comparing

Geometry: -recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes

Reading Comprehension:

-students will be able to identify: who, what, when, where, why and how

– students will be able to retell stories (Beginning and end) , and determine message, lesson or moral

– Students will begin to identify Long and short vowels starting with A, E, I sounds.

Week 2 – July 9    Focus on Subtraction:

-able to fluently add/subtract within 20 using mental strategies

-able to solve one and two step word problems involving taking of, putting together, taking apart, comparing

 

 

 

Geometry:

-identify triangles, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes

    Compare & Contrast

Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (different authors or from different cultures)

Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic

Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.

Identify Long and short vowels with O and U sounds.

Week 3

July 16

   Place Value:-understand ones, tens and hundreds place

(ex. 706- 7 hundreds, 0 tens, 6 ones)

-continue using mental strategies to add and subtract within 20.

Geometry: -Partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and quarters

   Informative/explanatory:

-introduce a topic

-use facts and definitions to develop points

-provide a concluding statements or section

Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.

Week 4

July 23

 

   Place Value:-understand ones, tens and hundreds place

(ex. 706- 7 hundreds, 0 tens, 6 ones)

-Begin to read and write numbers to 1000 using number names and expanded form

Geometry: -Partition circles and rectangles. Use correct vocabulary to identify halves and quarters.

    Narrative:

-Recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events

Describe details of actions, thoughts, feelings, events in order

-Point of View: identify differences in voices and characters

Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes

Week 5

July 30

   Place Value: 

Read and write numbers to 1000 using number names and expanded form

-Compare two three-digit numbers based on meaning of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits.

-Use the appropriate symbol to record comparison resuClts (<,=,>)

Geometry: -Use correct vocabulary to identify halves, quarters, and thirds.

    Responding to Literature:

-Make connections between self and the world

-Write opinion pieces about reading material

Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences

Week 6

August 6

 

   Place Value: Counting

Compare two three-digit numbers based on meaning of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits.

Count within 1000 with skip counting (5s, 10s, 100s)

Compare measurement of time and money while skip counting.

Geometry

Compose and decompose shapes using halves and thirds

    Create Stories:

Create narrative pieces recounting a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events – including actions, thoughts, and feelings.

Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

 

Week 7

August 13

   Place Value: Addition & Subtraction 

-Add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value.

Count within 1000 with skip counting (5s, 10s, 100s)

Geometry: -Compose and decompose shapes using halves and quarters.

Connect Images and Text
Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.

Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of the specific paragraphs within the text.

Explain how specific images (diagrams, photos, graphs) contribute to and clarify a text.

Week 8

August 20

 

 Place Value: Money

-Solve word problems involving quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

-Compare place values represented in money (ex: $1.06 equals 100 and 6 pennies)

Geometry: -Compose and decompose shapes using halves, quarters, and thirds.

  Read English Aloud With Confidence
Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.

Focus on a topic and strengthen writing by revising and editing.
