Extended Day

Our Distinctive Approach

At 82nd Street Academics, we provide children with positive early education experiences that invite students to develop a love for learning. While many of our educational practices are similar to other quality schools, we also have three beliefs about childhood development.

[restabs responsive=”false”] [restab title=”Parent Partnership” active=”active”]Our approach with our families is to develop a partnership in our program where parents can fully participate in the learning process of their children. All of our classrooms are equipped with cameras and audio capabilities so that parents can keep track of daily activities and be reassured that their child is in a safe environment where we are delivering on our program promises. If questions or concerns do arise, our teachers answer their emails daily and turnaround initial responses within 24 hours. Additionally, our teachers send out daily emails to inform parents about that day’s classroom activities and what steps parents can take at home to reinforce what was learned. We also encourage all of our parents to volunteer in the classroom. These volunteer opportunities can be coordinated with the lead teacher once the school year begins.[/restab] [restab title=”Whole Child Approach“]With each student in our program, we are trying to develop not just purely academic skills, but also areas such as social-emotional health, physical development, language & literacy development, and mathematical/cognitive thinking. Our whole child approach is driven by adaptive, teacher-written lesson plans which incorporates multiple domains of learning (some of which will be more fully described below) and is checked and approved by our Early Childhood Program Director. Using these multiple domains of learning, we are able to better individualize each child’s instruction and experience in our program.[/restab] [restab title=”Individualized Instruction“]To measure each domain and properly assess our students, we use a Department of Education accredited measurement system which includes observation and evaluation of each student over a several month period. Once we finalize our results, we can then offer students balanced sub-groups to improve areas in which they need development and to allow for our teachers and student peers to aid in this growth process.[/restab][/restabs]

Program Description

The Extended Day Program complements our private preschool and pre-k programs with advanced learning and development in literacy, math, science, and physical activity. All children in this full day program have a one hour rest period and at least one full hour of physical activity scheduled daily.

The Extended Day Program is taught by a lead teacher and two assistant teachers. Your child will have a separate classroom and teachers during the Universal Pre-K portion of the day. The Department of Education has increased expectations on what students should be able to do by the time they start Kindergarten. We want students attending our program to be as prepared as possible to excel once they reach Kindergarten.

Required Documents: Student Medical Form (NYC Immunization Requirements), Income Eligibility Form

For a student to be successful, it is important for them to have a strong foundation in 7 learning domains. These include a mastery of essential academic and non-academic skills. Our teacher-written lessons will focus on advancing a student’s language/literacy skills, mathematical thinking skills and physical development. The class often begins with Core Standard skills such as a learning numbers and letters, understanding pattern recognition and honing fine motor skills. Complimenting these mini lessons will be themed-based activities which will give students a more hands-on and interactive approach to applying their newly learned skills. Laptops and STEM kits will be fully utilized to engage students in themes such as Light, Buildings, Holidays, and Weather, all of which work as sister themes to themes introduced in UPK.

All teacher-written lesson plans are checked and approved by our Early Childhood Director. Additionally, our classroom teacher will be setting goals for everyone in the class as a group to meet by the end of the academic year. These goals will be tailored to the class and created to address a whole class need. For example, our classroom teacher may decide that one goal for the class is that every student must have mastery of positional words by the end of the school year. These additional collective goals improve the social/emotional health of all students in the class as they work together in cooperation to reach a class benchmark.

[restab title=”Learning Domains”]

Social-Emotional Health: This area includes developing self-awareness, becoming more independent, taking personal responsibility in the school environment, and showing empathy for others. These skills are vital for future success in life. Physical Development: Children improve gross motor skills (using large muscle groups) and fine motor skills (control over muscles in hands). We want children to learn the importance of physical activity at a young age.

Language & Literacy Development: Three-year olds have rapidly developing listening and speaking abilities. The daily activities in our program help young children express their thoughts and understand others. Activities also include letter recognition and the development of phonemic awareness and phonics skills necessary for emergent readers.

Mathematical & Cognitive Thinking: This area includes logical thinking skills such as comparing, sorting, measuring, and pattern recognition as well as learning numbers. We teach problem-solving skills so children become active learners.

Through play, children learn to use symbols, developing their capacity to understand abstract ideas. We incorporate these learning domains throughout each daily activity. Children explore their individual interests in classroom centers, which include blocks, dramatic play, manipulative toys, sand and water, and art. They will also engage in group activities such as gross motor time, read-aloud, outdoor science exploration, cooking, singing, and daily discussions.

We emphasize physical activity. Children have active play opportunities every day in The Learning Park or indoors in the classroom. Our schedule allows children time to be independent by playing alone, to make friends by working in small groups, and to build a community in the classroom through whole group activities. Teachers observe and evaluate children to find out more about their interests, which are the basis for classroom themes and activities. This keeps students motivated and engaged in child-centered learning. At 82nd Street Academics, our staff is committed to building a strong partnership with your entire family to give your child the best learning experience possible!
