Learning Park & Playground

The Learning Park is a state-of-the-art playground at 82nd Street Academics. Students develop balance, strength, coordination, and agility through the use of playground equipment.

The toys in the park encourage various learning styles – experimenting to see how to get to the top of the web, physical effort in the balance toys and space to run, and social toys where friends can play together. Kinesthetic learning is one of the Gardner Multiple Intelligences that guides our instructional design at 82nd Street Academics.

Researchers have studied Blue Zones for longer lives. Click here. These five regions around the world are famous for their daily physical activity and the Learning Park starts your child on the adventure to make New York City the 6th Blue Zone.

Construction

Joseph Lock Company built and installed wrought-iron fencing around the western side of the Garden in 2006. Additionally, in 2007, the Board of Directors voted to make the Learning Park a priority project, and our fundraising efforts allowed us to purchase site preparation services. Millamar Landscaping Co. was contracted to remove excess soils, level the grounds, and create a sub-base of crushed concrete.

Funding was also bolstered through a generous grant from the office of New York State Senator John D. Sabini (D – 13th Senate District). We then received an award from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services with the assistance of Senator Sabini and State Assemblyman Ivan Lafayette (D – 34th Assembly District). All things considered, we appreciate all that our local legislators have done for us! We worked with Raymond Michael Ltd., a distributor of Playworld Systems Inc. to develop the Learning Park’s design.
